ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new challenges with subsequent opportunities to teach innovative ways of team collaboration. One example is the utilisation of social media to foster online team collaboration. This study investigates the use of Discord by students, a social media platform originally developed for online gamers, to collaborate virtually to complete project team tasks. The research question – what role a social media tool, namely Discord, plays in fostering team collaboration – was investigated using a qualitative, interpretative approach. Topic modeling identified ten themes, with the most vital theme indicating that students initially used Discord due to the academic requirement but later extensively used the platform because of its convenience and usefulness. Most students continued to use Discord even after completing their studies. While the main reason for adopting the tool was convenience due to peers using the platform, it became a logical and practical platform to communicate with friends, work on completing tasks together, and as a result, create a strong sense of belonging. © (2022) by Association for Information Systems (AIS) All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

This article attempts to answer the followed research question: how did the restaurants innovate their business model in order to adapt it to the COVID crisis?. A study of two cases shows that the activities, the resources and skills, the revenue model, and the beneficiaries have been transformed even sometimes reinforced in order to keep the business on. In the two cases, the inner resources were mobilised and the offer was changed. As regards the suppliers, their profiles have been changed because of the take away offer which pushed the restauranteurs to have new recipients and new materials in order to adapt their offer. © 2022, Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. ABSTRACT

Contemporary shopping is experiencing rapid changes with the increasing ubiquity of technologies that can be utilised to create seamless omni-channel experiences. These changes have logistics-related implications for end-consumers. Adopting Bowersox (1978)'s [Logistics management. New York: Macmillan] categorisation of logistics activities, this study comprises a synthesised review of scattered consumer logistics literature to bring order and structure to this evolving research field. It is found that an omni-channel shopping environment enables the dynamic transfer of logistics activities between business operators and consumers; However, this interaction does not extend to the post-shopping last-mile context. Instead, last-mile logistics is characterised by a somewhat rigid extension/shift of logistics obligations to/from consumers. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a self-service and technology-dependence trend in consumer logistics, leading to the more active control of logistics activities by consumers. Four propositions along with a unified framework are proposed, based on which a list of future research questions is suggested. ABSTRACT

The COVID 19 black swan event has disrupted every aspect of life in unprecedented ways, causing organizations to scramble to effectively sense and respond to the tumultuous business environment. Business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) capability has gained attention as a key weapon in the arsenal needed to combat turbulent times and to adjust to the post-pandemic new normal. Post-pandemic BI&A trends point to changes in organizational priorities for BI&A infrastructure that influence the traditional view of BI&A architecture and its role within an organization. As a result, new challenges and opportunities are emerging. This paper identifies and examines twelve key post-pandemic BI&A trends from industry practice and six major research themes. It also proposes an initial set of research questions that could inspire future research in BI&A in the post-pandemic new normal. © 2022 IEEE Computer Society. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of VBI on student grammar comprehension. The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of VBI in enhancing students' grammar comprehension as well as the students' perspectives on using VBI in the classroom. This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pre-Test and post-Test research design. A pre-Test, post-Test, and questionnaire were used to answer the research questions. It was conducted at one university in Indonesia, with the participation of forty students. The result showed that VBI could enhance students' grammar comprehension as the post-Test score of the students was higher than their pre-Test score. It indicated that the video-based instruction provided students with quality instruction. Moreover, four students' perspectives after VBI implementation were presented. First, the VBI provided was informative that it assisted them to comprehend the grammar materials. Second, VBI was easy to be accessed at any time and from anywhere. Third, VBI given was interesting material. The final point was that VBI met the video quality expectations. To sum up, this learning media effectively improves the students' grammar comprehension. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

In this poster, we investigate the impact of online versus in-person summer equity programs. We designed and implemented a summer bridge program from 2020 through 2022 and collected pre- and post-survey data from students to measure the program's impact on students' self-concept, science motivation, growth mindset, help-seeking and concealment attitude, science identity, and sense of belonging. Our research questions are: RQ1: How do students' indicators change from pre-survey to post-survey in the online summer program (2020 and 2021) versus the in-person program (2022) RQ2: What indicators are most impacted (positively or negatively) in an online version of the program These questions will help inform us about how to support students who have started their undergraduate programs during the COVID-19 remote instruction period and whether or not the additional cost of an in-person summer program is justifiable by its impact on students. © 2022 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

The dataset, methods, and machine learning prediction framework on the Covid-19 theme have been published widely and complex. Special publications on the spread of virus infection 19 in the form of a time series need to be mapped more comprehensively. This literature review aims to identify and analyze research trends, datasets, and methods used in predicting Covid-19 with Machine Learning Engineering research between 2019 and 2021. Identifying the need, specifying the research question evaluating review protocol, searching for papers, scanning papers, and reporting results are the eight major steps of this systematic literature review. The most critical aspect of systematic analysis is defining the research questions. The PICOC techniques are used to identify research questions. Journal candidates were filtered out using inclusion and exclusion criteria techniques to shrink the SLR scope area. based on a literature study it was found that research in 2019-2021 on the Covid-19 distribution prediction system used variables: susceptibility, infection, mortality, geography, weather, and patient clinical data to be processed into ANFIS machine learning prediction models and neural networks are several models. A classification model that is widely used for hybrid processing in calculating covid-19 infection prediction. The datasets that are often used do not fully meet the epidemiological aspects that trigger the spread of COVID-19 infections. ANFIS and NN are several classification methods that are widely used for hybrid processing in calculating predictions of the spread of COVID-19 infection. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Non-pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs), such as Stay-at-Home, and Face-Mask-Mandate, are essential components of the public health response to contain an outbreak like COVID-19. However, it is very challenging to quantify the individual or joint effectiveness of NPIs and their impact on people from different racial and ethnic groups or communities in general. Therefore, in this paper, we study the following two research questions: 1) How can we quantitatively estimate the effectiveness of different NPI policies pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic?;and 2) Do these policies have considerably different effects on communities from different races and ethnicity? To answer these questions, we model the impact of an NPI as a joint function of stringency and effectiveness over a duration of time. Consequently, we propose a novel stringency function that can provide an estimate of how strictly an NPI was implemented on a particular day. Next, we applied two popular tree-based discriminative classifiers, considering the change in daily COVID cases and death counts as binary target variables, while using stringency values of different policies as independent features. Finally, we interpreted the learned feature weights as the effectiveness of COVID-19 NPIs. Our experimental results suggest that, at the country level, restaurant closures and stay-at-home policies were most effective in restricting the COVID-19 confirmed cases and death cases respectively;and overall, restaurant closing was most effective in hold-down of COVID-19 cases at individual community levels such as Asian, White, Black, AIAN and, NHPI. Additionally, we also performed a comparative analysis between race-specific effectiveness and country-level effectiveness to see whether different communities were impacted differently. Our findings suggest that the different policies impacted communities (race and ethnicity) differently. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The proliferation of ICT in today's world of work particularly in education has necessitated the need to assess lecturers' views of online assessment use in the covid-19 era given the disruptions in face-to-face teaching and learning process. The study adopted a mixed research design. The population for the study was 84 computer educators made up of 40 males and 44 females from the four public tertiary institutions in Enugu State, Nigeria. Three research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The instruments used for data collection were a structured questionnaire titled "Computer Educators' Perception of Use of Online Assessment” (CEPUOA) and a guided interview relating to the research questions. The internal consistency was determined using the Cronbach α reliability test which gave an index of.9. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while the null hypotheses were tested using a t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study indicated that computer educators have a positive disposition toward the use of online assessment in conducting various assessment techniques such as tests/quizzes, semester examinations, and seminar/project evaluations. The findings of the study further showed that the utilization of online assessment techniques facilitates timely monitoring of students' progress, and the provision of immediate feedback to the learners helps in preparing students with digital skills required to function in the 21st-century workplace, among others. In view of these, it was recommended that tertiary institutions should initiate workable policies that will encourage the effective use of online assessment by lecturers. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

ABSTRACT

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, great changes appeared in education in general and digital technologies played a substantial role in the process. The main objective of this research is to consider students' feedback and opinions on teaching and learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in (a) the present form before schools were closed due to the pandemic, (b) the online distance form of instruction during the pandemic, and (c) the present form of instruction after the pandemic. Research questions focused on three areas: (1) what form(s) of instruction students preferred, (2) whether/how digital technologies contributed to the process of instruction, and (3) in which form of instruction they learned more. The ex-post-facto approach and mixed methodology were applied. Data were collected by questionnaire. It was available online for students of the upper secondary school for medical staff (N = 153) and advanced school for higher medical staff (N = 183). We expect that (1) the present form of instruction after the covid-19 pandemic will be appreciated;however, there will also be some supporters of online distance instruction;(2) it will be the present form that will allow students to learn more compared to online distance instruction;(3) both teachers and students will improve their digital skills during the pandemic so that technologies can be exploited to a wider extent in the present form of instruction after the pandemic. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interdisciplinary research agenda for understanding the impacts COVID-19 response has had on our use of technology. The widespread unprecedented mandates on social distancing have forced a large majority of nearly 330 million Americans to rely on technology for work, education, and crucial societal functions. Using the Ecology framework, this research agenda identifies the domains of influence for the use of technology—from the individual and community to the organizational and societal levels. This chapter proposes a series of questions focused on the framework and offers a catalog of research questions as a launchpad for future research. This agenda serves as a guide for scholars and practitioners interested in understanding the influence of technology on the expansion or reduction of vulnerabilities for socially marginalized populations. The findings of the review suggest an increase in research on meso-, exo-, techno-, and macro-level interventions of technology use during COVID-19 and that some marginalized populations are not researched as much as others. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Contribution: The study provides empirical evidence and a deeper understanding of COVID-19’s impact on first-year engineering (FYE) students’learning experiences and motivation while accounting for gender and race/ethnicity-based variations. Background: In the Spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced campuses to close and shift unexpectedly to emergency remote instruction. These rapid transitions impacted all students, including FYE students. Research Questions: Based on the importance of the first-year experience of engineering students, this study investigated two research questions: 1) How does the rapid transition to emergency remote instruction affect FYE students’learning experiences? and 2) How do students’learning experiences during the pandemic relate to their motivation (self-efficacy and task value)? Methodology: A multimethod approach is used to investigate students’experiences on two dimensions: 1) engagement, learning, effort, concentration, interest, and interactions and 2) time management, study settings, and resources, by using ANOVA, regression models, and structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: Students who reported increased value of learning experiences reported higher self-efficacy and task value. Also, the results indicated that international students reported increased learning of new concepts, concentration in the class, interactions with instructors, and higher self-efficacy, while White and Asian students reported higher task value and availability of resources. ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research is to analyze the higher academic offerings in communication and related fields in the Andean Community to determine if there is a relationship with the potential demands of adolescents who developed competencies to generate and exchange audiovisual content since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research question is: should the academic curricula related to audiovisual and media competence of Andean universities change or be updated to meet a new profile of young people who know the audiovisual language? The methodology is qualitative and descriptive through content analysis of the academic curricula of the leading universities in the international rankings that classify Latin American universities, as well as semi-structured interviews with experts in higher education in communication in the region. In the case of communication studies and related areas, it happens that young people, before entering university, learn autonomously many of the techniques, processes and audiovisual languages that feed the contents of the current offer, but it is an instruction acquired without the corresponding social contexts, deontological senses and responsibilities. The denominations of the titles of the careers are classic, the formation of media competence is not alluded to or implicitly assumed, the same happens with the names of the courses taught, they respond to common or generic programs of professional formation with emphasis on journalistic production and audiovisual contents. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The U.S. public health enterprise is a complex system of public and private partners, loosely coupled, which work together to improve the public's health. This scoping review utilized peer-reviewed and grey literature to understand systems approaches may be used in the design or enhancement of public health governance structures and service delivery mechanisms. Titles and s were screened against the research question and retained materials were reviewed in full. The final analytic sample included 34 articles from an initial pool of 1128 unique citations that collectively described 25 systems approaches. The findings indicate that few avenues may be present to guide design or enhancement of public health systems when needs arise, such as in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scarcity of literature on this topic presents a challenge, and further analytical studies are needed to inform evidence-based systems design strategies and applications. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

ABSTRACT

One of the main impacts of technologies in the tourism sector is traveler empowerment. Technology has allowed travelers to be a lot more informed and to take a proactive role in organizing their own trip. Now, tourists are much more demanding, have several options to choose, and have more bargaining power. Tourist has also become not just a mere visitor, but a content generator sharing their experience with other travelers. This research intends to identify the adoption of technologies in the hotel and restaurant sector and secondly to identify smart technologies that can help to eradicate the virus and normalize the hospitality business. The research question is: How COVID-19 could be a trigger for the adoption of new technologies in the hospitality sector? The objectives are: (i) to identify new technologies already adopted in the hotel and restaurant areas, (ii) to pinpoint how new technologies could help in health and cleanness protocols, and (iii) to categorize changes in operational areas after the consecutive lockdowns. To achieve these goals, several case studies were collected to show and explain best practices for the future. The results are expected to help identify outcomes to build a survey to apply to hospitality professionals. Also, those outcomes will be useful in improving professionals' tools, resources, and procedures to help to eradicate the COVID-19 virus. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The results of research conducted by Katadata in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia showed that beauty products had the 2 highest sales after fashion. On the other hand, during the Covid-19 pandemic (social restrictions imposed), where not everyone was allowed to gather face-To-face, educational activities at school and college were conducted online. Everyone generally uses beauty products, however, during a pandemic, beauty product sales are still the 2nd highest. From this situation, this research was conducted with research questions, how do risk factors affect the Online Customer Experience Model specifically for beauty products during the covid-19 pandemic. This study uses 436 respondents who are customers of beauty products. This study uses quantitative methods with the Structural Equation Model and Partial Lease Square (SEM-PLS) techniques. It was found that the risk factors affecting the Affective Stage of 0.183 (18.3%), the risk factors affecting the Cognitive Stage of 0.127 (12.7%), the risk factors influencing the 0.225 (22.5%), the effect of risk factors on perceived control of 0.394 (39.4), the influence of factors risk of 0.089 (8.9%) on Repurchase Intention, the effect of risk factors on Trust in Online Shopping. The results of this research are very useful for industrial product development, especially the beauty industry. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

The number of students of African origin traveling abroad for postgraduate engineering education has increased over the last 30 years. Studying abroad provides unique experiences and benefits for African students and the host country. These experiences place international scholars in an ideal position to reflect on the different experiences between the practices, attitudes, social diversity, and competency development they find in their new study destinations and hence can make suggestions for improvement in their home and host countries. This paper explores the experience, reflections, and adaptation of African scholars to their international educational context during the COVID pandemic, using a collaborative autoethnography methodology. Elements of the theoretical frameworks of acculturation theory and adaptability theory were used in the collection, analysis, and discussion of the paper to address the following research questions: 1) What are the experiences and perspectives of African Diaspora graduate scholars in undertaking engineering education studies in the US? 2) What improvements are suggested for the study environments in their home countries and in the US? The findings raise provocative thoughts about the culture of and the philosophies behind the present nature of instruction, assessment, student supervision, experiences, and workload in the US and African countries. We argue for a need to disrupt several realities that have become a norm for African diaspora students and suggest how this can be done drawing from our own experiences within these unique environments. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Our aim is to study the contribution of telework to resilience during the pandemic. The research question is: how does telework affect individual and collective resilience during this crisis? We analyse the results from five online surveys from March 2020 to February 2021. The corpus results from the compilation of five different sources: written reports, two narrative surveys, a quantitative survey, and three focus groups. Thus, the transcription of 1,299 managers and specialists is studied following the textual data analysis methods. Our findings indicate that the contribution of telework differs whether the resilience is individual or collective. The process of resilience is also dynamic and we propose to distinguish three phases: preventive resilience (before the disaster), reactive resilience (during the disaster) and curative resilience (after the disaster). We use the results of the resilience study to discuss implications for the development of telework as a digital tool and practice. © 2022 IEEE.
